July Happenings....part 1

I apologize, it's been weeks since I've updated this blog and so much has happened. We've been very busy this past month and I'm finally getting a chance to write an update.

First of all - a Darrin update. A couple months ago Darrin applied to become a training officer. Several weeks ago we found out that he "made the list". He was sent to T.O. school and then last week was officially promoted and started with a new trainee. His schedule changed dramatically (he's now working the early morning shift - 10pm-6am and is working 5 days a week rather than 4 days). And just because he's suppose to work 8 hour shifts, doesn't mean he always does. As a TO - Darrin is responsible for staying with his trainee to help with paperwork after shift (and no, not as overtime). This means long hours. I expect him to have 10-12 hour shifts. If he gets off "early", then great. But if not - at least I'm not surprised. Darrin's trying to adjust to his new schedule and is doing pretty good. It can be hard to sleep during the day and feel like you're just getting long naps here and there, but he's learning to manage. One thing that is difficult is when he has court in the morning. This means he gets off of work at about 6am-8am (or whenever they're done with paperwork) and then he has to be at the courthouse between 8-9am....for however long they need him. Many times, he just goes back to the station to sleep until his next shift. To be honest, he probably gets better sleep there anyways -- no little children making a ruckus in the next room, like at home! :) I'm trying to adjust too. My body is very use to staying up until 2 am or so (since a lot of times I would wait for Darrin to get home with his old shift) but now it's important that I get to bed at a reasonable time. Since Darrin's getting home and going to bed just as we all are getting up and starting our day, it's important that I'm bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to be with the kids all day. I'm doing better at it. I realized that I need to have a bedtime routine and an actual bed time just like the kids. Anyways -despite the couple adjustments, everything has gone pretty smoothly. We're VERY excited for this big step in his career and I'm extremely proud of him.

Jake Updates
Our little man is growing SO fast! He's almost 6 months and almost crawling!! I can't believe it! In the past month, he's popped two teeth and has become SO mobile. He's an expert roller and flips everywhere. Seriously, I don't know why I even put a blanket down, he never stays on it. He kind of does an "army crawl" (although Darrin has a different name for it....how dare I mention the word "army" in this house! ;) ) however I don't consider this crawling. It's just a different way of getting around. But he does get up on all fours and rocks back and forth. He's so close to just taking off -- I know it's going to be any day now! This newly found mobility means that he's into everything and wants to do things that his sister is doing....however everything goes into his mouth!! So when Rylee is coloring, Jake's sure to be near, stealing a crayon and trying to chomp away on it. Ah..such is the stage, it won't last forever. So I just chuckle and take the crayon away (to which he gets VERY mad at me). :)

Here he is up and ready to go!
He's also eating solid foods. We started him on cereal at about 4 months and then this past month started him on pureed food. So far, he just eats squash and carrots and will be eating peas as soon as I make it. lol That's right - I make my own baby food. I don't know why this is a big deal, but to some it is. It's a lot healthier and A LOT cheaper. It's also not that much work. I recently got an immersible hand blender, which makes pureeing food SUPER easy. I love my new toy! :) I keep forgetting to take a photo of him with carrots everywhere - but as soon as I do, I'll post one for you all to see! :)
It's funny. When I was pregnant with Rylee, my former cheer advisor (who is also a mentor and mother figure to me) gave me a good piece of insight. She told me that with all of her girls, it took a good 6 months to get them acclimated into the family and get a good routine down with them. I didn't really notice it with Rylee since she was my first and I could just concentrate on her -- but now with Jake I've noticed that has been VERY true with us. I'm finally feeling confident enough to take them both places together with just me -- big grocery shopping trips, out to eat, parties....whatever. Maybe it's because now Rylee is a little over 2, she's becoming a little more self sufficient and behaves differently then when she was only a year and half (when Jake first arrived). Anywho... I don't know, it's just interesting that the insight that was given to me also was true for me. And I'm happy that I'm feeling good with juggling both kiddos. At least right now, I'm not totally outnumbered. Hopefully that won't happen for another several years, but when it does....watch out, things will definitely be crazy!! :)

to be continued....more updates in part 2 - Rylee Updates
