Cute Sayings and Sweet Readings

I love Rylee's imagination. I love the words that come out of her mouth (most of the time. :) ). I love to hear her thoughts and stories and ideas. In the past couple days she's told me that when I get bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger, then baby Brooklyn's going to come out. She pretended a tape measure was a frog named Bernie who would catch flies and bugs with his long tongue. She tattled on her brother during "quiet time" for getting out of his bed. However she came into our room to tell me, thus getting out of her bed as well. She didn't think that far ahead and quickly ran back to her room when I reminded her that she, too, disobeyed the rules. Oops. She told me one day she wanted to kiss Jesus. She's developed a "southern belle" accent and thinks that she can get away with things if she's sassy in a different voice. Too bad she's kind of right. It's the cutest thing and I can hardly keep a straight face. :)

Some things are just cute. But then, some things are more than just funny phrases or stories -- they not only show me her mind and personality, but give me a glimpse into her heart. Yesterday, at the start of "quiet time" I told the kids they could choose a story for me to read. Rylee said "Can you read your Bible, mommy?" My body stood still as my heart melted. Of course I could read my Bible to her. I asked which story she wanted to hear and she first chose the story of baby Jesus (sidenote - they both are still on a Christmas kick - wanting to sing Jingle Bells nonstop...so choosing this story wasn't so surprising to me). So I read Jesus' birth story from Luke. She asked for another story, this time from when Jesus was all grown up (seriously ....this is exactly what she asked me...crazy, right?) - I asked her from which book she'd like to hear the story from: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. And after explaining to her how all four books contain the same stories but written by different people (which she probably didn't really understand), she chose John. So I read about Jesus walking on water. She listened intently while her brother played around on the floor. It was awesome. So sweet. So innocent. Just a little girl, wanting to her mommy to read stories about Jesus.

I pray that her love for the Bible and reading about our Savior continues to grow. And I pray that I never miss an opportunity to help her do that. I pray that I don't get too caught up in the laundry or the dishes or wanting so desperately to get some "quiet time" of my own that I totally miss a moment to sit down with my sweet girl to read her God's Word. Isn't it funny too - sometimes I get caught up in reading the Word to "get" something out of it. Sometimes I try to decipher my mood or something that I need and then I look to my Bible to fill that need. Not saying there's anything wrong with that- but much less often do I just sit down and read about Jesus. Read about His life just to be reminded of things He taught, advice He gave, trials He endured. I'm so thankful for my little girl, her big heart that loves Jesus and the fact that so often, she teaches me so much about loving Jesus too.
